BRIEFING: EU, UK Set to Dramatically Increase Aid to Burma

The European Union is set to more than quadruple its annual aid to Burma from next year, according to a report by European Voice. EU aid, which averaged around US $25 million per year between 1996 and 2011, will increase to around $120 million from 2014 to the end of the decade, the report said. Meanwhile, the UK government has also announced that its aid to Burma for the current 2013-14 fiscal year is nearly double what it was in 2010-11. Bilateral aid for this year is $97 million, up from $50 million two years ago. Members of the UK Parliament’s International Development Committee are now in Burma for an eight-day visit that started on Nov. 19.
